NARAL is proud to stand with our LGBTQ Candidates, Both in Celebrating Pride Month and Fighting for Reproductive Freedom

As we continue to fight for a better future, NARAL and the LGBTQ community stand hand-in-hand in the shared fight for equal rights. We are united in the basic truth that every person, regardless of gender or sexual identity, deserves the right to control their own lives, bodies, and families. The LGBTQ movement represents values NARAL holds dear, and we are proud to stand with all who work for justice and equality.

Our right to control our own bodies, decide our own destinies, and create a family with the right person is shared across both movements. Couples across the country, regardless of their sexual identities, deserve the right to decide if, when, and how is best to start or grow their families. People of all gender identities struggle to access essential healthcare and feel safe in their communities. A person’s right to reproductive healthcare entitles them to decide whether, when, and with whom to have a family without politicians’ interference. Similarly, the right to love who you want and be who you are entitles people to build a family in a way that will bring them the most joy, fulfillment, and freedom.

Just as we have always said, our fight for equality is not and never has been just about abortion. Trump’s rise to power was fueled by those with a worldview where women, LGBTQ people, and so many others are considered second-class citizens. The anti-choice movement obsessed with rolling back our reproductive rights is the very same anti-LGBTQ movement, rooted in systems of anti-equality and bigotry that hope to control our bodies and our decisions. To them, the game is about control — control over women and families. The movements driving this divisiveness seek to define what family looks like for all of us.

Just as we encourage lawmakers to trust women to make their own health-care choices, we must trust each other — partners in the struggle for full equality — to champion each other’s causes and be allies in the fight for justice. As our essential human rights are attacked from all sides, there’s never been a more important time to elect champions that will fight for us at every level. NARAL is so proud to endorse candidates that fight for these values everyday. Candidates like Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Kate Brown (D-OR), Katie Hill (CA-25), Lauren Baer (FL-18), Angie Craig (MN-2), and Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23) are fighting for reproductive freedom and equality, and making history along the way. From marching in the streets to running for office, people in the LGBTQ community are rising up like never before. We’re so proud to stand alongside them in the fight for reproductive freedom and equality for all.
