Michelle Browder, a nationally recognized artist and activist, is bringing light to racial disparities in healthcare through art, history, and long-overdue conversations. She is the Executive and Artistic Director of the More Up Campus Capitol Campaign — which seeks to participate in the national reckoning around race in the United States by finding creative ways to honor the voiceless, the minimalized, and the ignored.
Informed decision-making was not an option for the enslaved women J. Marion Sims ruthlessly experimented on. But Michelle Browder is trying to subvert the narrative that elevated Sims to be “the father of gynecology.” Alongside artists…
In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress. She was also the first Black woman to compete for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination and the first Black presidential candidate for either party.
Chisholm proposed pro-choice legislation in Congress and encouraged the New York State legislature to repeal restrictive abortion laws. In 1969, Chisholm was named the honorary co-president of NARAL. She believed that access to abortion and reproductive healthcare should be treated as a vital part of healthcare for all, regardless of race, class, marital status, or age.
Chisholm passed away in 2005…
Disinformation, or falsehoods and rumors spread with the intention of causing harm, is a tactic used by the radical right to erode our democracy and fundamental rights. Here’s how anti-choice groups use disinformation to chip away at reproductive freedom in communities of color.
The Radical Right tries to use their aggressive opposition to abortion as a shield to deflect criticism. If they can convince the public that their political ideology is an article of faith, it’s harder to challenge. They’re then free to ignore issues of systemic inequality and to actively disempower the people who need access to abortion care.
We’re pretty sure it won’t come as a surprise to anyone that we’ve got a lot of grievances to air this year. So, without further ado, welcome to the reproductive freedom edition of Festivus 2020. You’re in for a wild ride.
First up, the anti-choice “activists” in whose heads we apparently are living rent-free. We’re fighting for reproductive freedom. You’re fighting for reproductive control. We are not the same.
Hi Readers! Thank you so much for taking the time to peek at our post for NARAL’s 2020 Intern Day. Aaron, Emma, and Taylor have created a list of 10 things every repro intern should know. Before you get to reading, get to know the writers:
Hey! My name is Aaron and I am the Southwest Organizing Intern at NARAL Pro-Choice America. I’m currently a third-year undergraduate student studying Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Colorado Boulder. I decided to intern with NARAL because of my firm belief that every American should have the freedom to make their…
It’s no surprise that as we get closer to the election, Donald Trump and other Republican politicians are scrambling to distract from a massive economic recession, months of protests against racial injustice and police brutality, and the fact that their gross negligence and determination to put ideology over science has led to a staggering coronavirus death toll in the United States of nearly 200,000 lives lost. …
Earlier this week, Senator Ted Cruz took it upon himself to once again parrot false and dangerous anti-choice talking points about abortion. These attacks come as the anti-choice movement and its Republican allies launch an all-out disinformation campaign against medication abortion, continuing their efforts to exploit the coronavirus pandemic to block access to reproductive healthcare.
When Sen. Cruz claimed that pregnancy isn’t life-threatening, thousands of people flooded his Twitter account to debunk his blatant lies and highlight the reality that pregnancy is, for many, a complicated medical condition that can come with severe health risks. Journalists like Susan Hennessey, alongside…
A note from our President:
Buzzfeed recently published an article regarding racism and bias in the reproductive rights sector, including the experiences of staff and board at NARAL. In the time since the article was posted, I have been in conversation with members of our staff — both past and present — our Board and with allies. I am honored by all of these conversations and many of these stories are evidence of our failures and blindspots and proof that we must continue to change in order to truly live our values. I am deeply sorry to those both named…

Advocates of reproductive freedom know that a right without access is a right in name only. That’s why, even as abortion remains legal in all 50 states, we continue to fight for meaningful access to abortion care. But while California has made strides in expanding access to reproductive healthcare, we’re falling shamefully short in ensuring Californians can care for their families in times of need. Today, California leaders have the chance to change that.
Like access to abortion, job-protected paid leave is critical for ensuring that every Californian has the freedom to…
Today, NARAL Pro-Choice America released its brand-new podcast, The Lie That Binds, which accompanies a recently released, bestselling book by the same name, authored by NARAL President Ilyse Hogue and NARAL Research Director Ellie Langford.
The evidence is clear: The Radical Right weaponized abortion to hijack our democracy. For decades, shadowy figures on the Right have been working behind the scenes, creating a web of lies designed to exploit Americans’ internalized misogyny and manipulate the conversation around reproductive freedom. The Lie That Binds is a limited series podcast that retraces how the Radical Right weaponized the issue of abortion in…
